Alright, folks, gather ’round, let me tell you about my latest project. So, I’ve always been into watches, right? And not just any watches, but those really slick Rolex ones. You know the ones I’m talking about—those GMT-Master IIs. They just have this vibe, you know? Classy, but not too flashy.
Anyway, I got it in my head that I wanted to try and make a high imitation one myself, specifically the “Root Beer” bezel one. Yeah, that’s what they call it, ’cause of the colors, I guess. Sounds kinda funny if you ask me. But hey, it’s a popular one, especially the older models, like the 1675/3 that came out way back in 1970. It is said that the original one is discontinued, making the price higher.
First, I started digging around, trying to figure out what makes these watches tick, literally. I found out that you gotta pay attention to the little details. Like, the real ones have a unique serial number on the case. So, I made sure to engrave a made-up one on mine. Then there’s the bezel—that’s the ring around the watch face. It’s supposed to rotate smoothly, but not too easily. And the colors, they gotta be just right, brown and something else, all blending together nicely.
Then, I got down to business. I ordered some parts online, yeah. Found a decent case that looked the part, a movement that’s the heart of the watch and some hands and stuff. Putting it all together was a bit of a headache, I won’t lie. I spent hours tinkering, trying to get everything to fit just right.
- First, I carefully attached the dial to the movement.
- Then, I installed the hands, making sure they were aligned perfectly.
- Next, I placed the movement inside the case and secured it.
- The bezel was the trickiest part. I had to make sure it clicked just right when I rotated it.
- Finally, I attached the bracelet, and voila, it looked like a watch!
I even tried to copy that “jump” thing the hour hand does when you adjust the time. Tricky, but I think I got it pretty close. And let me tell you, when I finally got it all assembled, it felt pretty darn good. It actually looks like the real thing, at least from afar. And it tells the time, which is what matters, right?
In the end, I wore my creation out and about. You know, just to see if anyone noticed. I went to the grocery store, the coffee shop, even bumped into a couple of watch guys I know. No one batted an eye. One guy even complimented me on it, saying it was a “textbook handsome piece.” Can you believe it?
So, yeah, that’s my story of making a high imitation Rolex GMT-Master II “Root Beer” bezel watch. It was a fun little project, and I learned a lot. Maybe I’ll try another model next time. Who knows. But hey, for now, I’m pretty happy with my “Root Beer” beauty.
