So, the other day I got it into my head that I wanted to try and remake one of those fancy PRADA bags. You know, the Galleria Saffiano Leather Mini-Bag. I saw it online and thought, “Why not give it a shot?” Seemed like a fun little project.

First off, I started digging around to figure out what this bag is even made of. Turns out, it’s this Saffiano leather. From what I gathered, it’s real leather, but it’s got this special cross-hatched texture. Looks tough, but also kinda classy.

I went down to the local leather shop. I looked around a bunch, trying to find something similar. It’s not easy, let me tell you! They had tons of different leathers, but nothing quite like that Saffiano stuff. The worker in there, a nice enough fella, said they used to carry something similar, but not anymore. Bummer.

  • I spent a good couple of hours just feeling different leathers.
  • Talked to the shop guy for a bit. He was helpful, but no luck with the Saffiano.

Anyway, I ended up buying some regular leather. Figured I could at least try to make a bag, even if it wasn’t exactly the same. It was some full-grain leather, which the shop guy said was pretty good stuff. Not too thick, not too thin.

Next, I needed to figure out the size and shape. I found some pictures of the mini-bag online and used those as a guide. I sketched out a rough pattern on some paper, cut it out, and used that to cut the leather. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a start.

Sewing it all together was a whole other story. I don’t have one of those fancy sewing machines, so I did it all by hand. Took forever! My fingers were sore, and I definitely messed up a few times. Had to rip out seams and start over more than once.

I also tried to add that little triangle logo thing that PRADA puts on their bags. I cut out a little triangle from some scrap leather and tried to stitch it on. Let’s just say it didn’t look quite as polished as the real deal.

The Result

Well, after all that, I ended up with a bag. It’s definitely not a PRADA, but it’s something. I learned a lot about working with leather. It’s tough stuff! And those designer bags? They’re expensive for a reason. A lot of work goes into them, even the small ones.

Would I do it again? Maybe. It was a fun challenge. But next time, I might just save up and buy the real thing. Or maybe try making something a little simpler, like a wallet or a belt.

It’s a far cry from the real Prada Galleria, but hey, I made it with my own two hands. And that’s something, right?
